Edmodo

Our class has been using Edmodo in the computer lab to help learn more technology skills. We have also been using it to practice our content subjects in fun ways. For example, when we were studying space, we used the Earth and Space app to practice putting the planets in order. To review telling time, we used the Time Teacher app. The students have also used Edmodo as a place to take quizzes, polls, and answer questions. The students answered what types of non-fiction subjects they would like to research, where they would like to go on a field trip, and more. Parents, I've sent home login password cards previously along with the permission slip. If you need another set of cards, let me know. There are several resources in our class folder in Edmodo that your child can use to learn at home.

DreamBox Learning

The students have really been enjoying DreamBox Learning in the computer lab. DreamBox is an adaptive online math curriculum and learning game. Students work on math tasks that are at their needed level and rigor. Parents, you can have your child practice this at home as well by visiting our school specific site: https://play.dreambox.com/login/h954/moseleye. The students' login and password are both their school ID number. You can locate it in Skyward Family Access.

Planet Research

The students worked in small groups to research a specific planet. Each group was responsible for finding three important facts about their planet using a text source from the library. They then worked with me at the Promethean to find three additional facts from PebbleGo. After finding their facts, they worked with their groups to create posters about their planet. They presented their findings and posters to the class. The students were highly engaged because they got to become the "experts" on their planet and teach the other students.

Space Questions

As a part of our lessons on non-fiction texts and features, we began to research space. The students first had to brainstorm questions they had about space. They worked in small groups to record their questions on a Circle Map and then we added all of their questions to a t-chart on the Promethean board. We then used various non-fiction sources to find answers to those questions.

Aging Booth

Just for fun on the 100th day of school, we used an app on the class IPad called Aging Booth. Aging Booth lets you take a picture and then it adds "aging" marks to show what you might look like the in the future. The kids were laughing hysterically about the pictures. I will admit though that a few of them thought it was "kind of creepy." I couldn't agree more!

Simon

For brain breaks in between longer lessons, we have been playing the old fashioned game Simon. But, we added a modern twist by playing it on the Promethean board. I love this game because it helps the students build their listening skills, attention span, and memory. The students love it because it is fun and fast paced. You can find the game here.

Spelling City

Here is a quick video I made using the App "Explain a Website" to show you how to access the features of Spelling City at home. The video is not perfect but you get the point.

I Have a Dream...

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the students wrote at least one "dream" or hope they have for the future. After writing, they illustrated their work. Using Audacity software, the students then recorded their "dream" which I mixed together. To listen to their speech, use your smart phone or Ipad to scan the QR code below. I made the QR code using QR Stuff.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Using PebbleGo, we learned about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The students then wrote facts they learned on a Bubble Map. They then chose five facts that they found the most interesting or important and added them to a handprint graphic organizer.

Place Value Posters

The students used Pixie 2 to create place value posters in the computer lab. They first learned how to create lines to divide the paper in fourths. We have been working on the skill of "click, hold, and drag." They then chose a larger number to model. They then learned to use text boxes to type in various ways to model the number. For example, they typed the number in standard form, expanded notation, and written form. They also drew the tens and ones as a pictorial model. Once they were printed, the students worked in partners to determine which number was the greatest and/or least. They then worked together to type the comparison sentence.

Pilgrim Writing

We learned about the Pilgrims' journey by using the Scholastic website and PebbleGo. The students then wrote about what the Pilgrims wear, eat, and can do. After prewriting, writing their first draft and editing, they made a Pilgrim to hold their final draft.

Taking a Break...

I have been taking a break from blogging this month. Although I love sharing ideas and gathering ideas from other bloggers, sometimes you just need to relax. With that said, I have a backlog of pictures that needed to be uploaded. So, new posts are coming soon.

Spinning Spiders

As a part of our fluency and phonics practice focusing in s-blends, the students learned the poem "Spinning Spiders" which we recorded today. I use the iPad app Hokusai to record the students. You can hear them reading their poem here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/e9r4hgdrefx7ail/Spinning%20Spider.m4a

I'm a Little Teapot

In reading we have been working on s-blends. We practiced identifying them in text by reading and singing "I'm a Little Teapot." You can listen to a recording of the students singing here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/h5i6jbdwdk7j19i/I%27m%20A%20Little%20Teapot.m4a. I typically record the students on our class iPad each week so they can hear themselves. Recording gives them a sense of purpose knowing they will have an audience and helps them identify ways they can read more fluently.

Poetry: My Dog, Tag

The students recorded their weekly poem "My Dog, Tag" on the class IPad. We learned this poem to practice the sounds for short /a/ and short /o/. Each week in addition to reading the poems for fluency, we highlight the phonics features we are working on. Recording the poems lets the students hear themselves and lets them know what areas to work on for oral fluency. You can listen to their recording here.

Poetry: My Cat

Click here to listen to the students read one of their weekly poems "My Cat." The students learned this poem as we studied the sound for short /a/. Our weekly poems are typically tied to our weekly phonics focus.

Poetry: I Like Jam

To listen to the students reading one of their weekly poems, "I Like Jam", click here. They love recording their poems each week and listening to themselves. They often rerecord because they want to get better. This helps them understand that fluency, or reading like we talk, is important.

Poetry: Friends

Each week the students learn one or two new poems. The poems are typically based on our phonics focus of the week. At the end of the week, the students record themselves reading. Knowing that they have an audience sets a purpose for their reading and encourages them to be more fluent. To listen to them read "Friends" click here.

Library Orientation

Our class visits the library each Friday morning. The students may select up to three books to take home. Before being allowed to take books home, they had a presentation on how to select books and how to take care of them.

Koo Koo Kangaroo

As brain breaks and to get the wiggles out, we have been dancing to online videos by Koo Koo Kangaroo. I learned about these videos in a Gifted and Talented training this summer. Fellow teachers, if you have not seen this or done these with your class, you should. They have a YouTube channel and their own website. Our class favorite so far is "Dinosaur Stomp." The picture is a little dark because we turn off the lights so we can see the Promethean a little better.
