Wind

In science we went outside to learn more about wind. We talked about what it looks and feels like when the wind is calm and when it is windy. The students experimented with the wind's movement with objects like streamers, luau necklaces, and plastic bags.

Weather Safety

In science we learned about various types of weather. As a part of our lessons, we discussed the proper clothing and tools needed to stay safe in various weather conditions. The students then illustrated a picture for each type of weather to show their understanding of these tools and proper clothing.

Describing the Wind

To help the students understand the difference between windy, breezy, and calm, we went outside to experiment. The students first observed the flags to see what direction they were blowing. During this time, we reviewed directional words from Social Studies. We discussed that the direction the flag is moving lets us know the direction the wind is blowing. As we observed we talked about if the flags were moving slow, fast, or not at all. They they experimented with plastic bags and streamers. They discovered that it was a very windy day that day.

Rainy Day Recess

As the weather is changing, we have to find creative ways to give the students opportunities for fun, physical activities for recess even when the weather is inclement. One of our favorite activities is doing exercises to a video called Rainy Day Recess. Rainy Day Recess can be found on Discovery Education. Although Discovery Education is a primarily a school resource, there are great Home Resources that include homework help in the core subjects. Below are a few pictures of our class and Ms. Goolsbay's class doing Rainy Day Recess together.
As a side note, we do go outside for recess every day, weather permitting. As the weather is changing, please make sure your child brings a jacket to school each day.
