Book Drive for Uganda


As a part of our commitment to Rachel’s Challenge by showing kindness to others, Moseley Elementary partnered with The Kikulu Foundation of Dallas to provide books for children in Uganda. Kikulu is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to supporting education for women and children in communities affected by poverty and oppression. The Kikulu Foundation staff is traveling to Uganda in December and is taking educational resources. Their goal is to take 280 children's books and spiral notebooks. Moseley students and staff have surpassed that goal by collecting over 430 books and 60 spiral notebooks. As a part of the book drive, the upper grade students wrote persuasive essays on why you should give books to the cause and the lower grade students discussed why we should be thankful for what we have. Book Character Parade

On Halloween the students were invited to dress as their favorite book character. For students who did not have a costume, we invited them to wear all black. We read Bats on Parade and Stellaluna in class and created masks to wear. The students who dressed up paraded around the school while others cheered them on.

Clock Book

The students brainstormed various activities that we do at school and the approximate time (to the half hour) that we do them at. We recorded the times on a Circle Map. They then worked in small groups to show one of those times on an analog clock. They then had to write a sentence about what time a specific activity is done using its digital time. They also drew a corresponding picture. The pages are being bound in a book to use as review and during math tubbing.

Classroom Christmas Tree

The students decorated our classroom Christmas Tree this week. They took such pride in placing the ornaments just right on the tree. The ornaments are copies of our favorite picture books that I printed, laminated, and glued a hook on.

Book Character Parade

On Halloween we had a "Book Character Parade." The students could dress up as their favorite character and show their costume and book off for their fellow students.

Repeating Pattern Posters

The students used paper pattern blocks to create repeating patterns using pattern cards written in letter form. They glued the pattern blocks and letter cards on construction paper. The pattern posters are currently on display in our hallway but will soon be bound into a book. The students will be able to use the book to recreate patterns and practice identifying the pattern core. It is amazing to see how many different patterns they were able to create using the same basic letter cards.



The Shape of Things

We recently read The Shape of Things to review shapes. After reading, the students were given a 2D shape and asked to turn that shape into a picture, like the examples in the book. The students then wrote sentences (with my help on the typing) about their pictures following the format of the book. Their work will be bound together as a classroom book. The students love reading what their friends write.

Student Created Books for Review


Several months back our first grade team brainstormed various ways we could help our students review concepts. One of the ways we came up with was to have the students create class books. The students create these books for all of the content areas.

For example, in science the students made books about force and motion, bodies of water, landforms, etc. My teammate typed up various phrases that included specific concepts and vocabulary in kid-friendly terms which the students glued in order and illustrated. In math, I laminated their pictures created from our shapes lesson (check them out here at The Shape of Things) and put them together as a book. I also laminated their Pumpkin Patch Place Value pictures and put them together as a book. They also made a place value book with specific vocabulary to show the different ways to build and model numbers as well as how to compare them from greatest to least and vice versa.

Also, I have taught the students how to export pictures in the computer lab from Pixie 2. We save these exported pictures and I print them front to back. They are then laminated and put together as books. Most of our computer lessons are based in math and rather than the work to just be stored in the computer, I like to print them.

For reading, we often make group Flow Maps to retell stories. During reading workshop, I divide the students into groups and each group takes a section of the Flow Map to retell that portion and illustrate it. This helps students remember what they have read and practice retelling stories.

We keep these books in a student-accessible bin and the students may choose to read them when they finish work early or during reading workshop. Because the students created them, they are very motivated to read them. Additionally, we read them as a whole group before district tests. Our district tests every three weeks or so, depending on the subject. This is good way to connect back to previously taught lessons and review specific vocabulary.
