College Week
In our district, this week has been designated as "College Week." Our counselor has set up many great activities for the students this week including the staff dressing up in caps and gowns, teachers sharing diplomas, and the students dressing in their favorite college shirts and colors. We also discussed the importance of college in each our classes. To help the students set a goal, we created a grade-level banner to show what year the students would graduate from high school and be able to go to college. The students each put their handprints on the banner. We hung the banner in our hallway as a reminder of the importance of staying in school, graduating, and going to college. Additionally, after discussing all of the careers and jobs that require a college degree, the students wrote about why they wanted to go to college and what they want to be when they grow up. We hung these up on our classroom door along with a pennant from my favorite college, The University of Texas at Arlington. Go Mavericks!

Red Ribbon Week - Door Decorations
Last week was Red Ribbon Week at our school. First grade decorated with the theme "First Graders 'Clothes' The Door on Drugs." Each class decorated their door with a different type of clothing and saying. Our class decorated with cowboy boots and our saying was "We give drugs the boot!"

Career Day
The students learned about various careers today thanks to the many volunteers that came to visit. The students learned about how to take care of pets properly thanks to Grand Prairie Animal Services. They also learned about fire safety and the role of firemen and paramedics thanks to the Grand Prairie Fire Department. Thank you to our school counselor, Ms. Terry, for planning this fun day for the students.

Red Ribbon Week
Last week we celebrated Red Ribbon Week with various activities including wearing red, white, and blue to say "United We Stand Against Drugs" and wearing our favorite team shirts to say "We Team Up Against Drugs." The first grade theme this year was "First Graders 'clothes' the door on drugs!" Each class decorated their door in a "clothes" related item and slogan. Our class slogan was "We give drugs the 'boot'!" You can learn more about Red Ribbon Week and ways you can talk to your child about this important topic at the National Family Partnership. Ms. Terry, the counselor, talked with the students about the history of the program as well as the importance of saying "no" to drugs.
