Thanksgiving Feast

Thank you to all of the parents who donated goodies for the students' Thanksgiving Feast. The students dressed in either brown or black to represent the clothing worn by Native Americans and Pilgrims at the first Thanksgiving Feast. They wore hats that they made to go along with their clothes: headbands, hats, or bonnets. They then munched on modern day treats related  to the first feast such as turkey sandwiches, grapes, and popcorn.

Cornucopia Placemats

For our class Thanksgiving Feast, the students created cornucopia placemats. After coloring their cornucopia, they told me at least six people, places, or things they were thankful for which I typed. They then added those words to their placemats.

Egg Hunt

First Grade had their annual Egg Hunt today behind the school library. The students raced around finding eggs and then enjoyed a treat of popcorn and juice. It was a great way to end a crazy week (crazy weather-wise here in Texas).

We had our Valentine's Day Party on Tuesday. The students enjoyed tons of sweets and enjoyed reading the cards they brought for one another. Such a great time!

Valentine's Day Treats

Here is a picture of the Pinterest inspired Valentine's Day Treats I made for my students. The tag says "Thank you for making First Grade such a ball, Valentine!" I found the rubber high-bounce balls in the Valentine's section at Target (my favorite place) and put them in snack-size Ziploc bags. I then typed the tags in Microsoft Word. The ruler feature is very helpful in making sure the tags were the right size for the bags. I printed the tags at home and stapled them across the top. In total, the treats only took fifteen minutes to make! As a busy teacher, that was a plus! And, what first grader doesn't love high-bounce balls?!? In the version I saw on Pinterest, they filled the bag with gumballs, and although that does go along with our beginning of year bulletin board, I thought these were more fun. Parents, as a reminder, our Valentine's Party is this Tuesday, the 14th, at 2:45PM. You are more than welcome to come.

Holiday Party

For our holiday party this year, the students created their own edible Christmas trees. They used a sugar cookie for the tree skirt and then placed an ice cream cone on the top for the tree. They covered the tree in green icing and then decorated it with M&Ms and Skittles. They then used Starbursts as the presents around the tree. For a special drink, they were treated to Sprite with Candy Canes in them. They loved watching the Sprite change colors. I think they had more fun making their treats than they actually did eating them! Click below to watch a slideshow of pictures from their party.

Reindeer Application Placemats

The students filled out reindeer applications today in writing. I got the application from The First Grade Teaching blog. As the students filled out their job applications we talked about appropriate behavior and what makes a good employee. I connected this characteristics back to our class Social Contract. After completing the application, the students glued them on half of a large piece of construction paper. On the other side of the mat, they glued down a picture of themselves that I had taken and printed the day before. They then traced their hands on brown paper for the antlers. With paint, they added a red thumprint nose. We will be using these as our placemats at our festive holiday party on Friday.

Thanksgiving Feast

Thank you to the parents who provided so many treats for the students' Thanksgiving Feast. They feasted on the modern day Thanksgiving - turkey sandwiches, popcorn, grapes, and of course cookies and cupcakes!

Cornucopia Placemats

The students made cornucopia placemats for our Thanksgiving feast tomorrow. After coloring, cutting, and gluing the cornucopia and fruit, they listed people and things they are thankful for. After they were printed, they glued them around the cornucopia.

Thank You PTA!

Last Friday the students in our class, along with one class from every other grade level, were awarded with a popcorn party from PTA for having the highest percentage of family members to join PTA for our grade level. The students loved the red, white and blue popcorn treat. One of the students even made a Moseley Thunderbird out of their popcorn. Thank you to all of the parents and other family members who joined PTA!
