Listen to Our Poems: Set 2

Throughout the year the students have been using the IPad app Hokusai to record themselves reading their weekly poems. We use poems in the class each week to  introduce our phonics focus but to also help with fluency. Below are QR codes to some of the poems they recorded. You can use your smart phone or IPad to scan the codes. I recommend using the app "I-nigma." I like this one because the students do not have to line up the scanner closely on the code. They can get anywhere close to the code and it will work.

Digraph Show and Tell

During our study of digraphs, the students were asked to bring in an object that started with /ch/, /sh/, /th/, or /wh/. The students brought in whistles, chalk, thimbles, chess pieces, sheets, white paintings, chocolate, and more.

Baking Cookies: Fiction or Non-Fiction?

We made cookies to assess the students' understanding of fiction and non-fiction with all of the first grade teachers team teaching. We chose to make chocolate chip cookies because we were also learning the /ch/ sound in word work. First we read and followed the recipe for making the cookies in both English and Spanish. The students identified that the author's purpose for writing the recipe was for information. The recipe was non-fiction. While waiting for the cookies to bake, we read The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. The students identified that this book is for entertainment. Then, the cookies were enjoyed by all.

Spinning Spiders

As a part of our fluency and phonics practice focusing in s-blends, the students learned the poem "Spinning Spiders" which we recorded today. I use the iPad app Hokusai to record the students. I'm a Little Teapot

In reading we have been working on s-blends. We practiced identifying them in text by reading and singing "I'm a Little Teapot." I typically record the students on our class iPad each week so they can hear themselves. Recording gives them a sense of purpose knowing they will have an audience and helps them identify ways they can read more fluently.

Poetry: My Dog, Tag

The students recorded their weekly poem "My Dog, Tag" on the class IPad. We learned this poem to practice the sounds for short /a/ and short /o/. Each week in addition to reading the poems for fluency, we highlight the phonics features we are working on. Recording the poems lets the students hear themselves and lets them know what areas to work on for oral fluency. You can listen to their recording here.

Poetry: I Like Jam

To listen to the students reading one of their weekly poems, "I Like Jam", click here. They love recording their poems each week and listening to themselves. They often rerecord because they want to get better. This helps them understand that fluency, or reading like we talk, is important.

Poetry: Friends

Each week the students learn one or two new poems. The poems are typically based on our phonics focus of the week. At the end of the week, the students record themselves reading. Knowing that they have an audience sets a purpose for their reading and encourages them to be more fluent. To listen to them read "Friends" click here.

Phonics Genius iPad and iPhone App

One of my favorite phonics apps is Phonics Genius. The app has flash cards of short vowels, long vowels, blends, and digraphs. You have the option to have the words read aloud. This is great for introducing the specific sounds. The sound can then be taken off to have the students practice reading the words independently. The app also allows you to add your own phonics words. I plan on using the app for Daily 5, to introduce the weekly phonics focus, and in guided reading.

Student Teacher

Our class is blessed to have a student teacher for the next month or so, Ms. Willemin. She will be gradually taking over teaching lessons one or two subjects at a time, with my help, until she reaches full responsibility. Ms. Willemin is a student at A&M University and we welcome her to our school and class! She has already taught many great lessons, including this small group lesson below, over long and short vowels.



SpellingCity

One of the many ways we practice our weekly word wall and phonics words is through the lessons and games on SpellingCity. The students love playing all of the games and I love that it introduces the spelling of the words to the students as well as their meaning in sentences. We use this site on our Promethean Board as a part of Daily 5: Working on Words. SpellingCity is a fun, free way for your child to practice their words at home.

Digraph Show and Tell

In reading we are working on making connections and the phonics sounds for /ch/, /sh/, /wh/, and /th/. To help the students make connections to these sounds so they can remember them, we had Digraph Show and Tell. The students brought in chess and checker pieces, whisks, whales, sharks, whistles, sheeps, shirts, and more.











Ch-Ch-Chocolate Chip Cookies!

To help the students learn about the purpose of informational versus entertainment texts and to make a real world connection to the digraph /ch/, all of the first grade teachers and classes joined together to make chocolate chip cookies. We read the recipe, in both English and Spanish to the students. As we read, the students took turns following the steps. As we made the cookies we discussed that recipes are meant to inform or teach you something. Then while the cookies baked, we read The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins and Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar by Viviana Garofoli. As we read these books we discussed their purpose: entertainment. And, of course, the students then enjoyed eating the cookies.

Phonics Focus: Sports Pennants

Last week we were studying various sounds including /sl/, /sp/, and /st/. We also were having "college week" in our district. So, the students created sports pennants to help them remember the sound for /sp/.

Digraph Practice Online

To help your child practice digraphs at home, visit the reading website Starfall. They can practice the /sh/ sound at the beginning and ending or words here, the /wh/ sound here, the /th/ sound here, and the /ch/ sound here.

Digraph Show and Tell

Over the last several weeks our word work has been based on the digraphs /sh/, /ch/, /th/, and /wh/. We have sorted words beginning with these sounds, found them in word searches, wrote them in dictation sentences, put together word puzzles with them, and wrote sentences independently with them. To bring it all together, we held Digraph Show and Tell. Students could bring in one item that begin with one of the sounds.
