How to Make S'Mores

A few weeks ago we learned about camping. As an introduction to the theme, we made S'mores. As we made the S'mores, we talked about the steps we had to take to make them. We recorded the steps on a Circle Map. We then wrote the steps in logical order on a Flow Map with transition words. This writing is apart of our Write From the Beginning program. After enjoying their snack, the students went back to class and wrote their own Circle Map, Flow Map, and sentences to write how to make the S'mores. They then created a paper S'more to display with their writing.

Valentine's Day Party

We had our Valentine's Day Party on Tuesday. The students enjoyed tons of sweets and enjoyed reading the cards they brought for one another. Such a great time!

100th Day Trail Mix

To celebrate the 100th day of school, the students created a 100 day snack. Parents supplied a variety of items (thank you!) for the students to use to create trail mix. Each student had made a 100 day place mat the day before using 10 circles. On the circles, they wrote numbers skip counting by ten until the reached 100. They then added 100 stickers to their placemat. On the actual 100th day, the students chose ten pieces of the different snack items to place on each circle of their placemat. They practiced skip counting to 100 while they created their snacks. They then of course enjoyed the yummy treat. We had so much food left over that the students made several bags to take home.

Holiday Party

For our holiday party this year, the students created their own edible Christmas trees. They used a sugar cookie for the tree skirt and then placed an ice cream cone on the top for the tree. They covered the tree in green icing and then decorated it with M&Ms and Skittles. They then used Starbursts as the presents around the tree. For a special drink, they were treated to Sprite with Candy Canes in them. They loved watching the Sprite change colors. I think they had more fun making their treats than they actually did eating them! Click below to watch a slideshow of pictures from their party.

Polar Express Day

Last Friday the students were treated to a special story time in the library with our principal, Mrs. Oliver. Mrs. Oliver read The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. The students were very comfy as they listened because it was also pajama day. Following the reading, the students enjoyed hot chocolate.

Gingerbread Subtraction

On Wednesday we reviewed subtraction problems by using Gingerbread mashmallows followed by a fun word problem lesson created by my teammate, Mrs. Timms. The students placed however many gingerbread clipart on a cookie sheet that they wanted. (My teammate used foil which was so cute - too bad I forgot mine at home that day!) They then pretended that some of them fell off of the cookie sheet and glued them all down. They then solved a subtraction word problem by identifying how many gingerbread men were on the cookie sheet to begin with, how many fell off, and how many were left on the cookie sheet. And, of course, the students then ate their gingerbread marshmallows. Yum!

Tasty Soil

To help the students remember the different types of soil - topsoil, sand, and clay - the students created a snack of dirt! They started by crushing graham crackers in baggies followed by Oreos. Of course they had to lick out the filling of the Oreos before crushing them. The graham crackers represented sand, the Oreos represented topsoil, and then they used chocolate pudding to represent clay. They layered all of the ingredients in a clear cup and added sour worms to the top. Yum! Thank you to all of the parents who supplied the ingredients for this tasty lesson!

Dominoes Doubles Snack Style Recording Sheet

Thank you to Carrie at A First Grade Teachers Passions and Obsessions for creating a recording sheet to go along with our Dominoes Doubles Snack lesson. If you haven't had a chance to check out her blog, go do so! It is great! You can view a slideshow of my students creating their Dominoes Doubles here.

Doubles Dominoes - Snack Style

My teammate, Mrs. Timms, had an excellent idea of how to get the students to visualize addition doubles. We use dominoes as manipulatives to teach doubles so she extended this by suggesting we create edible dominoes with graham crackers, white icing, and chocolate chips. We started by adding one chocolate chip on each side to model 1+1= 2. We then added another chocolate chip to each side to model 2+2=4. We continued until we had modeled 9+9=18. Of course, after modeling the doubles, the students ate them! Below are two close-ups of the edible dominoes along with a slideshow of the students making them.
