What Time Is It?

Students were divided into small groups and given a specific time on the hour or half hour in digital time. They then had to draw that time on a small analog clock. They then glued those clocks onto a construction paper band to create a  watch. The students then chose a partner from another group. In those groups, they practiced asking one another "Do you know what time it is?" and the other student would respond by reading the time on their watch. Both students would check the time on the watches to make sure it was accurate. They continued this process with several new partners. It was a fun and engaging way to have them practice time!

Clock Book

The students brainstormed various activities that we do at school and the approximate time (to the half hour) that we do them at. We recorded the times on a Circle Map. They then worked in small groups to show one of those times on an analog clock. They then had to write a sentence about what time a specific activity is done using its digital time. They also drew a corresponding picture. The pages are being bound in a book to use as review and during math tubbing.

Additive Patterns

The students practiced extending additive patterns by following four step cards. They built their patterns with color tiles and verbally identified how the patterns grew and changed. They then worked in cooperative groups to recreate one of the additive patterns using paper color tiles. Individually the students wrote one or two sentences about how the pattern grew.

 

First Grade Turkey!

Our Instructional Media Specialist, Ms. Hollingsworth, created a fantastic schoolwide art project for the students. Each student was sent home a turkey feather to decorate in any way that they chose. The feathers were then placed together to create a large grade-level turkey. They turned out amazing!

Fact Family Tree Map Download

Here is a fact families activity that I created to help my students identify related math facts. The students sort the fact family card on large construction paper to create a Tree Map. Sorting the cards into fact families helps the students understand that they must use the same three numbers in the addition and subtraction problems. In my class, the students worked in small groups to sort and create the Tree Map. A recording sheet is provided to use as an assessment of their individual understanding. You can download the file at my TPT store.

Entertainment vs. Informational Texts

We have been studying Author's Purpose through a variety of texts. To assess the students' understanding, they worked in groups to sort pictures of books on a t-chart. The pictures of books came from Scholastic Book Club mail outs. The students could cut out as many books as they wanted to sort.

Attributes of 2D Shapes

As we learned about the attributes of 2D shapes the students worked in cooperative groups to show examples and non-examples of circles, triangles, squares, and square rectangles. When sorting they had to verbally justify how they knew what were examples and what were non-examples by explaining the specific shape's attributes such as how many sides and vertices the shape has. The students then went on "gallery walks" to see how their classmates had sorted their shapes.

Alliterations and Rymes

The students worked in small groups to brainstorm alliterations and rhymes about school on Circle Maps. After deciding on their group's sentence, they wrote them on chart paper and illustrated them.
