Robots: More Pictures

Here are some close-up pictures of the students with their robots. As you can see by the smiles on their faces, they are very proud of their inventions. Their robots turned out fantastic!

Robots: I Can Be an Inventor, Too!

At the conclusion of our inventors unit, the students had the chance to be an inventor themselves. Using empty boxes covered in foil, the students created their own robots. They added numerous recycled items such as toilet paper tubes, bottles, lids, buttons, and pipe cleaners. They are currently on the revising and editing stages of writing about what their robot can do if he or she were real.

Earth Day Book Swap

Each year the first grade teachers host a school wide Earth Day Book Swap. The students bring in books from home that they no longer read and trade them with other students. It is a good way to promote reusing materials and literacy at the same time. As a part of our commitment to Rachel's Challenge, we also collect books for one of our local family shelters.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose

In science we have been learning how to reduce, reuse, recycle, and repurpose. In our class we have a basket full of paper scraps that the students can use during Daily 5 for writing practice. On this day, the students worked to tear some of the colored construction paper up in small pieces to create picture frames. As they worked, we discussed where paper come froms, what would happen if we continually wasted it, and how we could reduce, reuse, recycle, and repurpose the paper.

My Robot

In Social Studies we spent several weeks studying various inventors such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Alva Edison, and Garrett Morgan. At the conclusion of our inventor unit, the students had the opportunity to become inventors themselves. With just two boxes covered in foil, a hot glue gun (used by the teacher, of course), and a bunch of junk, the students created their own robots. They turned out really great. The students created a plan, implemented that plan, and then wrote about what their robots could do.
