Fourth and Fifth Grade: "Spirit of Service"

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., our district has an annual "Spirit of Service" art contest. All fourth and fifth graders participated at the campus level. Three of our students participated at the district level. One fifth grader earned "Second Place" and another earned "Honorable Mention". The individual pictures below are the ones entered into the district contest. The collective pictures are the campus level entries.

 

First, Second, and Third Grade: 'I Have a Dream"

The First, Second, and Third Grade students brainstormed various dreams they have for the future as we learned about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They then drew a self-portrait with a thought bubble to illustrate their dream.

During our study of Martin Luther King, Jr. the Kindergarten students created overlapping handprints with various skin tones.

When I Grow Up...

Kindergarten, First, and Second Graders drew self portraits dressed as what career they want to have when they grow up. We mainly focused on service jobs as we did this lesson around MLK Day. We talked about his life and legacy and the need for serving others. Kindergarteners were given templates for various career hats to paint and cut out. They then extended it by drawing their face and body. The other two grade drew them with no assistance and used water colors to paint them.

 

I Have a Dream...

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the students wrote at least one "dream" or hope they have for the future. After writing, they illustrated their work. Using Audacity software, the students then recorded their "dream" which I mixed together. To listen to their speech, use your smart phone or Ipad to scan the QR code below. Using PebbleGo, we learned about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The students then wrote facts they learned on a Bubble Map. They then chose five facts that they found the most interesting or important and added them to a handprint graphic organizer.
