Parts of a Plant Technology Diagrams

The students used Pixie 2 to create computer based plant diagrams. They filled the background with a sky background using the fill feature. They then used the paint feature to paint soil, grass, the stem, and the roots. They then used the search feature on the stickers section to add leaves and a flower. They had to resize the flower and flip the leaves to make them fit the stem. Then, using text boxes, they labeled each part and at least one function of that part.

The students made flowers and then labeled the parts with their name and function. Their diagrams were added to our class garden bulletin boards.

Technology Savy: Flower Diagrams

The students created diagrams on flowers on the computer using Pixie 2 software. They used the various painting and clipart features to create their pictures. They then used text boxes and our class Brace Map to label and write about the function of each part. All of their diagrams can be seen on their KidBlog. The students export their work independently as I model it on the Promethean Board and then upload their work into their own blog.

Kelp Forest

The students learned about the Kelp Forest during our ocean unit. They learned about the parts of the ocean plant and made comparisons to the parts of land plants. They also learned about how animals and humans depend upon the Kelp plant. The students created Tree Maps and diagrams to show their learning.

Day and Night

In science the students learned about the cycle of day and night. To show what they know, they drew a picture with labels of sunrise, day, sunset, and night. They then put the pictures in order in a cycle on a piece of construction paper.

Life Cycle of Chickens

In science, the students have been learning about various life cycles. One of the life cycles was of a chicken. Below is an example of one of their diagrams:

Plant Parts and Their Functions

In the computer lab, the students used Pixie 2 to create a plant diagram. They first used the paint bucket feature to create a cloud background. They then used the spray paint feature to create grass and soil. They used the shape tool to create a rectangular stem. Using the stickers feature, they added a flower and leaf. They used the paint brush to add roots. Finally, they used the text box feature to label each part of the plant and to write two functions of that plant part. Although this lesson could be done on paper by drawing, I find it very important to teach the students how to use as many of the features in Pixie 2 as possible because they transfer to so many other programs that they will need later in life. After the students created their diagrams, they exported them and then uploaded them to their KidBlog. I show the students how to do this step-by-step on the Promethean but the majority of the students are now able to do this independently after just a few lessons.

Plant Diagrams

During our study of plants, the students created plant diagrams. They labeled the parts and their functions. The diagrams were added to our class garden display in the hallway.

Kelp Forests

As a part of our research on the ocean habitat, we learned about the kelp plant. We learned the parts of the kelp and compared them to what we know about the parts of land plants. The students then labeled and colored a diagram of the kelp plant. The students added a picture of at least one animal that uses the kelp forest for food, shelter, or protection.

Landforms and Bodies of Water

The students reviewed bodies of water and landforms by creating a foldable diagram to illustrate the different features of mountains, hills, plains, oceans, rivers, and lakes.

Frog Facts

As a part of our study on frogs, we visited Kidzone to learn interesting facts about frogs. After reading, the students created a diagram of the life cycle of the frogs. After creating their diagram, the students shared the life cycle process with a friend. The following day, the students created a frog out of construction paper. In groups, the students brainstormed facts that they learned from the website and we added them to our class Circle Map. The students then chose one fact per group to write on the back of their frog in the form of a "Did you know?" question. The students shared these facts at our weekly Pride Rally along with Ms. Goolsbay's class. At the end of the fact sharing time, the students all sang "Five Green and Speckled Frogs."

Animal Life Cycles

Last week we continued our study of life cycles by comparing the life cycles of bunnies, butterflies, earthworms, silkworms, and chicks. After learning about them, the students were divided into groups and assigned one of the animal life cycles. The students then became "experts" on their animal and created a diagram of the life cycle. They then presented their diagram and any information they learned about their animal to their classmates.

Parts of a Plant

This week we have been learning about the parts of a plant and their functions. We used this great website to aid us in our learning. To assess what the students learned, they placed defintions of each plant part on a brace map. They then used the brace map definitions to create their own diagrams. The diagrams were placed on our class garden display. We will be adding more to our class garden display as we study life cycles of earthworms and frogs.
