Kindergarten Calder Inspired Creations
After studying about artist Alexander Calder, Kindergarten students cut out shapes in primary colors and arranged them intuitively on their work. They then created various lines in the background using a ruler. Their works were on display for Open House and Big Art Day.

Kinder-Third Crazy Line Sculptures
During a study of artist Alexander Calder, Kinder through Third Grade students created crazy line sculptures out of air-dry clay and pipe cleaners. The students displayed these on their homeroom desks for Open House which also happened to be Big Art Day.

Fifth Grade Tie-Dye
Fifth Grade drew various intersecting wavy lines to divide the space of a piece of paper. In those spaces, they used oil pastels to create warm and cool color tie-dye patterns to practice blending techniques.

Fourth Grade Tints and Shades
Fourth Graders drew continuous wavy lines and then drew geometric shapes on top. For the geometric shapes, they colored them in with a shade and a tint of a color. They repeated this for the background but I a different color.

Third Grade Hot Air Balloons
Third Grade drew hot air balloons and added various lines as details. To color in their designs, they chose one color from the color wheel and filled in the space created between every other line. They then had to use the color wheel as a graphic organizer to figure out what their chosen color's complimentary color would be and color in the rest of the space. For the background, they colored the clouds with white crayon and then painted over them to create a crayon resist.
Second Grade Rockets
Second Grade practiced using a ruler as a tool for measurement when drawing. Each student had to draw a rocket ship that was five inches long. They then added various lines to be the flames. The students colored the rocket ship with crayons and then painted the lines in color wheel order.

First Grade Crazy Hair Lines
The First Graders recently drew self portraits with crazy hair to practice drawing various lines, after drawing their portraits and coloring their faces with crayons, they painted their hair in color wheel order with liquid water colors.

The Kindergarten students practiced making various lines in pencil and then traced them in permanent marker. The following week, the used liquid water colors to paint their art in color wheel order.

Wayne Thiebaud: Fourth Grade Cakes
Fourth graders learned how to draw three tier cakes as a part of our study on artist Wayne Thiebaud. They reviewed basic types of lines and used those lines to create interesting designs on their cakes. We discussed various jobs that you can have as an artist including a cake designer. They then added a border with various lines.The students outlined their drawings in permanent marker and then painted them with water colors. These were displayed across from the art room as a part of a larger Wayne Thiebaud inspired display at Open House.

Kindergarten Thumbprint Holiday Lights
Kindergarten practiced making wavy lines with permanent black markers. After making their lines, they added holiday lights with their thumbprints.

Third Grade Pattern Spider Webs
The Third Grade students drew spider webs using a variety of straight lines with the aid of a ruler. The free-hand drew curved lines to connect the straight lines forming the spider web. After drawing, the colored each section with crayons in a two-color pattern. They worked on showing variety and balance as they worked. After completing the patterns, they created spiders out of black paper to add to the web.
